Lavender Kite Audio Research Hour w/ Barnaby Bennett - Labor Day special

Calgary, 06.09.21

To mark a Labor Day broadcast, Barnaby Bennett plays live recordings of Paul Robeson, an actor, activist, baritone singer and folk artist. Robeson's political work extended to unemployed and striking workers in the US and beyond, anti-imperialist student activists and the Republican cause in the Spanish civil war.

This episode begins with his 1952 concert at the US/Canada border, after Robeson was denied entry into Canada for a benefit concert at a worker's union: not only an important historical moment, but also an important piece of the patchwork that is the American Folk Music movement.
