I wanted to do a mix of synthpop, new and no wave, funk, disco, electro, and avant-garde experimental music from around 1977-85 that anticipated and influenced the birth of techno. The tracks in this “proto-techno” mix give us an idea of how artists must have been excited by the influx of new electronic equipment, and it’s interesting to hear how musicians working in different genres and countries approached those new sounds and techniques. Being a young musician in the mid-80s listening to all this, how could you not feel inspired to invent techno?
