The Great African Disco w/ Temi Kogbe

Lagos based collector and DJ Temi Kogbe traces connections in African popular culture through vinyl.

This mix is very influenced by Joni Haastrup and his legacy. His band Monomono released two major afro-funk albums for EMI in the early 70s co-produced by the great Odion Iruoje. It includes early highlife jazz by Orlando Julius, with whom Joni honed his craft as a vocalist, as well as a lot of less well-known musicians/bands that played some music that can be filed under afrobeat. It also features afrobeat music sung in Hausa and Igbo and of course Yoruba which was Joni Haastrup's mother tongue.
