With Cranes

Cranes is an art rock / ethereal dream pop band fronted by Alison Shaw and her multi-instrumentalist brother Jim Shaw. Formed in 1986, they were originally based in Portsmouth on the south coast of England. Guitarists Mark Francombe and Matt Cope joined the group in 1989 and their and debut vinyl album "Self Non Self” was released soon after. The intensity of that record garnered very good reviews and caught the attention of BBC radio’s John Peel, who began to play tracks right away and invited the group to record the first of two sessions for his show in the first week of release. Shortly afterwards Cranes signed to the label Dedicated and their album "Wings of Joy” came out in 1991. The release of "Wings of Joy" caught the attention of Robert Smith of The Cure who picked the Cranes to open for them on their 1992 ‘Wish’ world tour in 1992. Cranes went on to release the albums "Forever" (1993), "Loved" (1994), "La Tragedie d'Oreste et Electre" (1996), and "Population Four" (1997). After a 4 year break, Cranes re-emerged on their own independent label Dadaphonic to release the albums "Future Songs" (2001) and "Particles & Waves" (2004), and the self-titled “Cranes" (2008) which saw the band heading in a more electronic direction while retaining the trademark sound of previous releases.

Cranes are releasing their John Peel Sessions (1989-1990) on vinyl/CD via Dadaphonic on June 2nd. The record features beautiful artwork by 4AD/v23 sleeve designer Chris Bigg.

Cranes have also just announced that they will play at the EartH Theatre, a beautiful old 1930’s cinema in Hackney London on October 14th 2023. The show featuring the original band members Ali, Jim, Mark and Matt is to mark the 30th anniversary of the ‘Forever’ album with songs from that album being played… Update: Sold out!!

"Cranes is a band with a furiously creative drive which allows even their simplest songs to sound beautifully honest and original.”
