Emerging as an offshoot of the broader, internet-native fifth wave of emo, bedroom emo and its harsher sibling bedroom screamo are fusion genres that pull together two seemingly disparate worlds. By juxtaposing the abrasive textures of emo against the saccharine harmonies of bedroom pop, bands such as Your Arms Are My Cocoon and Cicadahead evoke a feeling that sits between comfortable and inconsolable, like screaming into a pillow or being wrapped up in a blanket of quills. Elsewhere, artists like gingerbee and nu-twee figurehead b7lanket have furthered the genre by injecting elements from indietronica, bitpop and shibuya-kei to create a sound uncategorisable yet distinctively online, capturing the simultaneous wonderment and anxiety brought by coming-of-age in front of a screen.
