In the mid-1950s musicians such as Yusuf Lateef and John Coltrane started to use instruments, structure and patterns based on traditional Indian music. Artists sought to expand the boundaries of jazz by incorporating the modal structures, improvisational depth, and spiritual ethos of Indian music.
