In the years following Romania's violent revolution in 1989, the country – like many other former Eastern Bloc nations at the time – went through a period of dizzying new cultural influence. New Western ideas, alongside the growth of the internet saw a particular explosion in electronic music Romania. Unshackled by pre-existing traditions and established forms, the music was hopeful, forward-thinking, and completely sui generis. "The music at that time was not segregated by commercial or underground appeal; there wasn’t even much gender segregation, and everything was built on a foundation of naive club music made with rudimentary studio equipment and angelic, almost infantile pop vocals that spoke of an idealistic world of love."
