Although originally formed by SM Entertainment, with whom they released their first six albums, they signed a new contract under Good Entertainment in 2003. Their contract not starting till 2004, they went on hiatus and pursued solo activities. After returning for a further three releases, they went on a second hiatus, once again pursuing solo activities but also enlisting for their mandatory military service. The group made their comeback on March 23rd 2012 – Almost fourteen years to the day after their original debut and after four years of hiatus.
With ten Korean studio albums, one Japanese studio album and one greatest hits album under their belts, Shinhwa have changed musical styles various times throughout their run, whilst maintaining their own distinct style. They’re also well known for their choreography and are often hailed as one of the best dance groups in South Korea.
Shinhwa hold many notable achievements and awards. One of which came with the release of their sixth album, Wedding, on December 6th 2002, when they became the longest running Korean boy band in existence. Having not disbanded, they still hold this record, along with the record for being the only boy band to stay together with it’s original members for over a decade. Shinhwa has sold an excess of 5 million records worldwide, an incredible feat for an Asian group and one of the highest album sales in Asia. On July 1st 2011, they became the first k-pop group to own their own entertainment company, with whom they made their comeback in 2012, releasing their 10th Korean album entitled “The Return”.
