Univers Zéro (Univers Zero) is an instrumental Belgian band formed in 1974 by drummer and composer Daniel Denis. The group is associated with the Rock in Opposition (RIO) movement, which sought to provide an alternative to mainstream rock in the late 1970s. Their music is known for complex structures, dissonant harmonies, and influences from 20th-century chamber composers such as Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, and Belgian composer Albert Huybrechts.

The band’s debut album, 1313 (1977), introduced their chamber-rock style with largely acoustic instrumentation, including oboes, bassoon, harmonium, and spinet, set against a rock rhythm section. Their second release, Heresie (1979), expanded this approach with an even darker and more intense sound. During the 1980s, albums such as Ceux du Dehors (1981), Uzed (1984), and Heatwave (1987) incorporated more electric instruments, including synthesizers and electric guitar, while retaining the band’s dense and intricate style. Later recordings such as The Hard Quest (1999), Clivages (2010), and Phosphorescent Dreams (2014) reflected both acoustic and electric elements.

Lineup changes: Univers Zero has had a rotating membership centered on founder Daniel Denis. Early members included Roger Trigaux (guitar, keyboards), who later left to form Present, along with Guy Segers (bass), Patrick Hanappier (violin), and Michel Berckmans (bassoon, oboe). Over the decades, many Belgian musicians have performed with the group, contributing to its evolving instrumentation and sound. Despite these changes, Denis has remained the primary composer and driving force behind Univers Zero throughout its history.
