Carmina Escobar

Carmina Escobar has been played on NTS shows including The Imaginary Music Radio Hour w/ Laura Steenberge, with CIHUANAHUALLI: Ilhuicatl​ ​Yayauhco​ ​(el​ ​cielo​ ​negro​ ​de​ ​la​ ​noche​ ​/​ ​the​ ​black​ ​sky​ ​of​ ​night) first played on 24 April 2018.

Experimental vocalist Carmina Escobar is a creative performer, interpreter of contemporary music, improviser, sound and intermedia artist from Mexico City. Her work focuses primarily on sound, the voice, the body and their interrelations to physical, social and memory spaces. She has intensely explored the capacities of her voice developing a wide range of vocal techniques that she applies not only to her performance and creative practice but also to investigate radical ideas and concepts regarding the voice.

She has been awarded with the Performers Grant on two occasions by the National Fund for the Arts in Mexico, recipient of the MID Atlantic Arts Foundation 2010 and USArtist International Award 2010 with the Estamos Ensemble Project and is currently holder of the 2014 NFA Master Artist Grant. Artist in residency at OMI Music (New York), STEIM (The Netherlands), Krakow Academy of the Electro­acoustic Music Studio (Poland), CANTE (center for the arts and new technologies) (Mexico), BINAURAL (Portugal), Guapamacátaro Art and Ecology Residency (Mexico), Montalvo Arts Center (California) and I­Park (Connecticut). She has material released by Abolipop Records, Edgetone Records, Noisetrade, Cottons good archive Records, Mathka Records and LINFA.

In her artwork the Voice is the phenomenon and conceptual trigger that links all the materials, analogue or digital, in order to create an experience that sets in motion the audience perception. She has presented her own work in diverse festivals, biennials, experimental venues, formal concert halls and living rooms of the Mexican Republic, the USA, and Europe. Currently she is a lecturer at the California Institute of the Arts in the Voice Arts Department teaching experiential voice and contemporary vocal music practice
