In the 1960s Françoise Hardy emerged, with effervescent fashion, into the boy's club of French pop music, quickly becoming an international sensation and a national treasure. Her famous sensuous singing voice, now synonymous with monochrome French sophistication and cool, has often been imitated to the point of parody, but rarely matched. Unlike many contemporaries, Hardy was willing and able to write original material, and remained incredibly prolific up until her recent retirement. This In Focus takes in the best of her romantic, nostalgic discography. Image credit: (Photo by Alain Liennard\INA via Getty Images)

Planet Earth

DAILY

The natural world is dominated by rhythm – from the daily back-and-forth bounce of the tides, to the intricate swing of birdsong. Humans are, of course, part of the natural world. Taking inspiration from the elements, this four part series explores drumming and percussion from around the world, past and present.

We begin with the aqueous, natural sounds of water drumming and dried fruit percussion. Next we dig into the earthen rumble of tribal and folk rhythms, followed by the unbridled fire of improvised jazz performance. And finally, we close with the ethereal, futuristic patterns of synthesised percussion.
