Mississippi Records is an independent archival record label that has been releasing music by totally original (and as a result, often overlooked) artists for nearly 20 years. The label is dedicated to working directly with artists and their families, securing their legal rights, and creating equitable documents of their work to share with the world. Mississippi works across genres, regions, and timelines. The music we’re drawn to is often created outside of existing commercial industries. It’s the work of visionary artists with something urgent and original to say. And it’s sustained by, and in turn nourishes, communities that extend beyond the music. We recognize this brilliant music is not created in a vacuum, and we’re dedicated to understanding and uplifting the stories around the art.

The Lijadu Sisters & Konkombe Special w/ Yeye Taiwo Lijadu

With Lijadu Sisters

Celebrating The Lijadu Sisters’ birthday and their brilliant new re-issue of Horizon Unlimited on Numero Group – as well as the coming screenings of Konkombe: The Nigerian Pop Music Scene (dir. Jeremy Marre, 1979) soon happening in London, New York, Chicago, LA and Lagos, Yeye Taiwo Lijadu takes us through her memories from the making of this groundbreaking album and award-winning film in the late 1970s.

Produced at the Sisters’ home in Harlem, New York City by Eric Welles-Nystrom and in partnership with beatsoftheheart.tv, Numero Group, and Native Mag.
