Emerging from the creative crucible of LA's loose "beat scene" collective of the mid-2000s alongside fellow artists such as Ras G, Thundercat, and Nosaj Thing, Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus took a painterly approach to the structure of hip hop production. Part of a jazz and soul lineage that includes Motown songwriter Marilyn McLeod and spiritual jazz matriarch Alice Coltrane, Ellison infused instrumentals with loose improvisational flourishes and an experimental spirit that frequently breaks beyond the definitions of hip hop. His style has expanded further incorporating R&B, jazz, IDM, and psychedelia, including soundtrack work, and wide collaboration – notably working with Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Thom Yorke and countless others.
