Sounds Of Resistance: Korean Minjung Gayo
In the 1980s, the South Korean democracy movement came to a head against the brutal Chun Doo Hwan military regime. As a part of the cultural movement against authoritarianism, capitalist exploitation, and US imperialism, Korean students and workers composed songs that expressed the spirit of the "minjung" - the people.
Noraereul Channeun Saramdeul (The Song Seekers) was one of many noraepae singing clubs that served as the face of the movement, but in the 90s and 2000s a flood of other groups emerged, melding Western folk idioms, Soviet-style choirs, MIDI programming, and Korean traditional rhythms. This mix highlights the peak of minjung gayo (people’s songs” from the 1980s-2000s. Selected by DJ Hotpot.
