NTS Guide to: Hard Bop Vol. 1

The landscape of jazz was altered forever when Charlie Parker electrified the genre, pioneering bebop. When he suddenly passed away in 1955 at the age of 34, many wondered how they could follow him. Some opted to branch off from the bebop style, eschewing the Bird's dense melodic runs and swing influence – they slowed the tempo, and stripped back elements, taking notes from gospel, blues and the R&B sound that was becoming the popular music of the day.

Despite its less technically demanding style, and slower tempos, the new sound became known as "hard bop", because of its gritty, blues-indebted emotion, and tough driving grooves.
