She Male. A Dutch DJ duo that proved be true chameleons of the Dutch dance industry. Maarten and Tahnee - the guy and girl behind the moniker – took the Amsterdam scene by storm in 2010 and before they knew it, they were destroying dancefloors at noticeable parties in the Netherlands and abroad.
They started out playing poppy electro, but soon they realized that home is where the heart is. Electro, house, techno - and every now and then some mean moombahaton - became their new favorites.
While they understood that putting a great amount of passion and energy in the genres they played is essential, achieving a form of perfection also turned out to be one of their top priorities. Help and tips on how to achieve this came from the likes of Vicarious Bliss (Ed Banger), Joshua Walter, WANNABEASTAR, Made in June and many more.
Ultimately they turned their eclectic sound into highly danceable and cutting-edge DJ sets. Crafting and playing these live sets quickly became their way of forging their own unique path.
In the summer of 2011 She Male continued to mesmerize and hype up audiences all over the country. Their path rapidly lead to a lot more people noticing their skills. Highlights include a gig played on Joost van Bellen’s RAUW Stage at Solar Weekend Festival 2011 and a primetime performance in in Paradiso’s Main Hall.
After that the word continues to spread quickly outside of their home country. Their first international booking in Volda, Norway left the audience talking about the duo for eons. Some even dare say that whispers of the duo’s energetic performance still make the ground tremble around Rokken, the venue where they performed in front of hundreds of ecstatic Norwegian party people.
Their Golden Gnome Award (Dutch ‘People’s Oscars’ for the dance scene) nomination in 2011 for ‘Best Name’ was one of the tipping points in their career. The real cherry on top was their nomination in 2012. It was the year they stood alongside fellow nominees Henzel & Disco Nova, Spacegirls, G-Team and Meisjes Zonder Smaak in the category ‘Best Duo/Group’.
In 2012 their second international gig was a fact. They shook up audiences abroad once again by showcasing their trademark style at Gutterslut in East Bloc, one of London’s most hip & happening parties.
But why stop there? Because it was only a matter of time before the international scene took notice once again. Their third international gig in Porto, Portugal is coming up soon and the duo doesn’t seem to be anywhere near done.
A sidetrack She Male was dying to explore also became reality in 2012. The duo decided it was the right time to organize a party with fellow DJ and good friend Monsieur Plastique. They successfully introduced a revolutionary new concept in Amsterdam called ‘Demokraten Disko’. A creative place where the audience is King.
The first edition of Demokraten Disko was a success, and the ambitious duo now know what it takes to throw an exceptional party. And fact is that the second edition will prove to be even better.
In the past two years the duo frequently flirted with the idea of remixing tracks and producing their own music. The bootlegs they made and spread on the internet (e.g. their edit of Azealia Banks’s crossover electro hit ‘212’) were discovered and loved by many all over the world.
Although making bootlegs proved to be a lot of fun, they decided it was time to produce their own tracks. Their first original release is slated for summer 2012.
The duo have always believed in the exchange of energy between performer and audience. It’s what turns a regular night out into an incredible party. A final ingredient to make the collective experience more memorable than ever. If talent, charm and originality have anything to do with it, you should definitely expect to hear a lot more from this duo in the future.
