Sounds on Screen: Béla Tarr & Mihály Víg

Musical selections from the filmography of renowned Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr, soundtracked by Tarr's friend and composer Mihály Víg. Vig composed music for Tarr's films beginning in the late 1980s, with both artists arguably reaching their career highs with Sátántangó, Tarr's 1994 masterpiece, a seven hour long drama set in the quiet Hungarian countryside for which Víg created the soundtrack, and starred in the main role.

Víg's compositions mirror the emotional landscapes of Tarr's films – black and white, meditative pieces with patiently lengthy shots, that plumb the unacknowledged psychological depths of everyday life.
