NTS Guide to: Golden Age of Malian Music

Selections from the "golden age" of Malian music from the late 1960s into the early 1980s. This was the era following Mali's independence in 1960s. President Modibo Keïta, eager to make music a key part of a newly independent national spirit, funded and encouraged the forming of musical communities and orchestras across the country. Many of these groups fused the generations-old griot story telling tradition with modern instrumentation.
